The Story
In 2005, Kathleen Hiraga, began searching for an animal-free, plant-based organic fertilizer that would deter rodents from invading her greenhouses in Southern California. Her company, OrganicsRx was custom-growing organic seedlings for Whole Foods Markets, and pests were attracted to the animal-based fertilizer she was applying. Searching for a solution with no success, she set out to formulate a product that ticked off all the boxes she needed; a plant-based dry water-soluble fertilizer, certified organic that flowed thru driplines and was backed by data. Over 2 years of trialing, she succeeded and created a new nascent product in the multi-billion-dollar fertilizer space. Whole Foods began selling the OrganicsRx line of 6 fertilizer products side-by-side with her lettuce seedlings and within 4 years, OrganicsRx had become a national retail brand sold in Ace Hardware, Target, Home Depot, Whole Foods, Sprouts and 200 independent garden centers across the country.
With the retail side of OrganicsRx managed, she stepped back into her original R&D role in early 2021 and began formulating a second line of animal-free fertilizers specifically designed for commercial organic fruit and vegetable farming. After many months performing greenhouse and in-field trials with Plant Sciences Research in Monterey, California, the data gleaned that the new Supergrow formula was on par with synthetic fertilizer products. Kathleen and her team continue to work directly with organic and conventional farms, developing and selling plant-based fertilizer products and advocating for improved health & safety oversight in food agriculture. OrganicsRx is based in Ann Arbor, MI and Monterey, California.
